Importance of self-care for healthy living

As spring kicks into high gear, the importance of self-care and healthy living is critical. It seems our schedules and “to do” lists also kick into high gear. Between spring clean ups, yard work, gardening, setting up outdoor spaces, getting campers ready for the season, the kids’ session of spring sports, it seems there is simply not enough time in the week. It is so difficult to maintain balance and take time for self-care when the demands on our time keep growing and our available time keeps shrinking. However, maintaining healthy self-care and balance is an important part of stress management, and we need to use all our coping skills as the demands on us increase and our free time seems to disappear in the blink of an eye.

One of the biggest challenges many people have is the guilt associated with just saying “no.”  It is perfectly OK to just say “no” if you do not have the time, if you are overwhelmed, if you simply do not want to do something, if you have other commitments, and even if you need some time for self-care. The reality is the better you look after yourself, the better you are able to take care of all the other demands in your life. When we let our proverbial cup run dry, there is simply nothing left to draw from.

Self-care does not have to be a spa day or 4 hours golfing, although there is nothing wrong with that option! It can be as simple as aromatherapy from candles or air diffusers that make you feel good and destress. It can be listening to your favorite music and/or dancing for 5 minutes. It can be a takeout meal or cooking your favorite comfort food. Exercise is always an excellent method of stress reduction. However, many of us feel if we cannot commit 30 – 60 minutes to exercise, we do not get the full benefit. However, research says a 15-minute walk a few times a day has the same health benefits. Start small by taking back precious moments during the day where you can. Make a list of things that make you happy and give you a mental boost. Then try to engage in one (or more if possible), every day! Over time you will enjoy the benefits of a boost to your well-being and mental health!
